Manhattan, under the Dutch rule, was called "Nieuw Amsterdam". Although a somewhat thriving colony, The Netherlands were out-colonised by the British, who had stationed more troops there than the Duth had inhabitants in New Amsterdam by the time it was transferred to the British.

[Peter Stuyvesant]? dealt with the English and traded New Amsterdam for the country of Suriname.
