Moses, (Hebrew: Moshe) Hebrew liberator, leader, lawgiver, prophet, and historian, probably lived in the thirteenth and early part of the twelfth century B.C., led the Israelites? out of Egypt. The greater part of his life-history is preserved in Biblical narratives.

He is traditionally regarded as the author of the Torah, known as the Books of Moses, but this idea is rejected by most biblical scholars (see JEDP theory).
