Marathi is language spoken in the state of Maharashtra, India.
Its script is
Devanagari, that is same as Hindi and Sanskrit.
It is supposed to be branched from
Sanskrit (like many other languages in India). It is spoken by about 80 Million people.
Huge volume of litertature is created in Marathi, since last 1000 years. (oldest known written marathi is about 1000 years old. the rock inscriptions of Shrawana-Belagola(...) ) prominent marathi authors of the day are P.L. Deshpande, Jaywant Dalawi, Wyankatesh Madgoolkar, etc
