Originally coined (at the time just by anecdote, but now seen to be somewhat controversial) by Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene as a 'meme', such that meme's may evolve similarly to genes. Expanded upon by Susan Blackmore in her book The Meme Machine.
