A googol is the number 10100, that is, 1 followed by one hundred zeroes. The term was coined by Milton Sirotta, nephew of American mathematician [Edward Kasner]?.

Why give a name to this number? Why is it important?

The number is only important for didactic or instructional purposes, in the sense that is impossibly large, but not infinite. Might as well call it something. There is a lot of power in a name.
