Given two fields F and G such that G contains F, the Galois group of the field extension G/F is the defined as the group of field automorphisms of G which are the identity mapping when restricted to F. G is algebraic over F if and only if the Galois group is pro-finite.


We need a link to Galois theory and the fundamental theorem here.
