In 1819, Dartmouth College was the subject of the historic [Dartmouth College Case]?, in which the State of New Hampshire attempted to amend the College's charter (signed by King George) to make it a Public university. The Supreme Court found the amendment of Dartmouth's charter to be a violation of a contract, and prevented New Hampshire from taking the college.
Dartmouth's motto is "Vox Clamantis in Deserto". The school color is a dark fir green. The sports teams go by the name Big Green, or Green, which replaced earlier mascots involving Native Americans. Dartmouth was strictly a men's college until the 1970s, when women were allowed to enroll as students.
