Cyril

Monk, scholar, theologian, and linguist (born Salonika?, Greece, 827; died Rome, February 4, 869). One of the two brothers who invented and brought the Glagolitic alphabet to Moravia in order to teach and instruct a selected group of pupils the newly invented alphabet. Cyril travelled with his brother Methodius. The two managed to convince the Pope that the Slavs needed the Bible in their own language. His work was later transmitted by his pupils who made the journey back from Moravia to Bulgaria. Cyril, however, did not invent the alphabet on Bulgarian territory. Cyril was later canonized as a saint by the Orthodox Church and is also called "apostle of the Slavs".
