Council of Trent

Ecumenical council of the Catholic church held in response to the Reformation. Specified clearly Catholic doctrines on salvation, the sacraments and the canon, in opposition to the Protestants, and standardised the Mass throughout the church, largely abolishing local variations; this became called the Tridentine Mass, after Trent.
