Colorado Springs is a middle-sized city, population 347,156 (estimated, 1998, according to the U.S. Census Bureau), located just east of the geographic center of the state of Colorado in the United States. At elevation 6,035 feet, it is situated near the base of one of the most famous American peaks, Pike's Peak, on the east side of the Rocky Mountains. The capital of Colorado, Denver, is 68 miles to the north.

In addition to Pike's Peak, there are many other tourist attractions in the area, including the Garden of the Gods, featuring amazing red sandstone formations. According to the Colorado Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau, the area attracts some six million visitors yearly.
