The cello is second in importance to the violin in an orchestra's string section. It plays notes on the bass cleff, and has 4 strings tuned in fifths: C (the lowest), G, D and A (the highest). Unlike the violin, the cello is played in an upright position, with the musician drawing their bow horizontally across the strings. It's large body ensures a rich, low tone.
