A style of manufactured [pop group]? featuring (usually) four or five singers. Often, they evolve out of church choral groups and the like, or are put together by producers who audition the groups for looks and dancing ability (and sometimes singing ability, though many times little attention is paid to that aspect). In most cases, their music is written, arranged, and produced by a producer who will work with the band at all times and controls the group's sound - even to the point of hiring [session singers]? to record [guide vocal]?s for each member of the group to sing individually (it is quite common for such groups to be incapable of singing harmonies together without such trickery). Equally important to the group's commercial success is the group's image, carefully controlled by managing all aspects of the group's dress, promotional materials (which are supplied to "teen magazines" and the like), [video clip]?s. Typically, each member of the group will have some distinguishing feature and be portrayed as having a particular personality stereotype - such as "the baby", "the bad boy", "the nice boy", the "smart boy" and "the funny boy".

Boy bands, if they have commercial success, do not tend to last long. As fans of boy bands age (comprising mostly the very young, preteen girls), their musical tastes tend to evolve quickly and a new generation of fans seek something new and different. Even if success is sustained, members of the groups with actual musical talent and songwriting ability tend to seek out solo careers - not to mention the egos that develop as the members of the groups start believing their own publicity.
