Short for the German word "Blitzkrieg" (translates as lightning war), the Blitz was the name given to the extremely quick German invasions near the beginning of World War II. The blitz's were infamous for their extremely effective use of armored divisions to wipe out the defenders quickly.

The Blitz is also the name used for the German air force's (Luftwaffe's)) bombing campaign against London during World War II.

In American football, a blitz is a defensive maneuver in which one or more defensive backs, which normally remain behind the line of scrimmage during a play, are instead sent across the line to the opponent's side in order to try to tackle the quarterback.
