Arbeit Macht Frei is the ironic
? slogan
? placed over the entrances of several
Nazi concentration camps in operation before and during
World War II. The words, in
German translate literally as "work is liberty" or (more loosely) "work makes you free." The entrances of several camps featured this slogan, including those at
Auschwitz I, Dachau
?, Gross-Rosen
?, Sachsenhausen
?, and the Terezin
? Ghetto-Camp.
