Application Programming Interface

An Application Programming Interface (API) is a set of definitions of the ways in which one piece of software communicates with another.

Examples of APIs are:

• The PC BIOS call interface
• The Document Object Model
• The UNIX system call interface
• The Microsoft Win32? API
