Ankara (formerly known as Angora) is the capital of Turkey and the country's second largest city. Ankara is an important commercial city as the marketing center for the surrounding agricultural area. The city was famous before being a capital for its long-haired goats and their wool (Angora wool). Being a capital of Galatia from the 2nd century B.C., it gradually became a minor city after being conquered respectively by Romans, Persians, Arabs,
Seljuk Turks and
Ottoman Empire. Ankara was chosen as the capital during the indepence war (after World War I) led by Kemal Atatürk because of its central location in Anatolia and as an uprising against Ottoman Empire and its capital Istanbul.
