Originally coined 'straight edge' by Minor Threat in 1980?. Sometimes abbreviated sXe. sXe was also symbolized by a large black X marked on a persons hand.
- Viewed as a lifestyle only, and a life time commitment to the self to say away from the things above.

- There is not one main reason people choose to be straightedge.

- Typically the lifestyle is used as a stepping stone to allow one to, be more involved with their mental and physical health. In doing so you may find some straightedge people don't intake caffeine, or they choose to be vegetarian or vegan. They also feel having a clear mindset is a REAL way to approach life and/or spirituality.

Some Straight Edgers have exhibited a condescending attitude towards people who do engage in having sex etcetra. Straight Edgers have been reputed to beat anyone they see smoking at shows brutally. At times, singers for straight edge bands have been known to get off stage and do the same.
There are a few accounts of straightedge people being violent towards others who are not, but the great majority of straightedge people do not promote violence at all.

A large part of the straightedge movement is chronicled
in the wonderful book named "All Ages" by Beth LaHickey?. This book interviews the members of many of the sXe bands of the mid 80s, such as [Seven Seconds]?, [Gorilla Biscuits]? , Bold?, etc. However the interviews are 10 or 15 years after these people were first starting out. The people are mostly upper-middle class white males. Their shows were mostly performed for 'all ages' crowds, as most music clubs would not allow people under 21 in so as to be able to sell alcohol. Some of the sXe icons were in fact thieves, drunks, and woman-abusers, despite their pristine ranting. However many more were not like that at all. The interviewees are everything from running DIY? record labels they had started way back, to lawyers, to organic farmers, to followers of the "krishna" religion. One interviewee
was a girl who worked the concession stand for many shows and sums up the entire movement as an important effort for these boys to understand their maleness and
their place in the world, even if it was ridiculously
pretentious at times.

A lifestyle where, intentionally, and in the face of actual opportunities, one does not:

A straight edge lifestyle is not a philosophy and is not associated with or based on any religion. It is something one does without worrying about philosophizing. Straight edge is also a genre of music advocating a straight edge lifestyle.
