Movement in American
popular music, in the late 1970s, growing out of the
New York City musical scene centred around the CBGB club. The new wave had many parallels with
punk rock but tended to favour the more literate lyrics with differing musical influences. Both forms tended to be a reaction to the bluster of much of the music of the 1970s however.
In the UK one of the first new wave groups, and ultimatly the most successful in commercial and longevity terms was
The Stranglers.
