The quagga is an extinct relative to the zebra. It became extinct on August 12, 1883 when the last quagga died at the [Artis Magistra zoo]? in Amsterdam.

The quagga looked much like normal zebras, except that the only have stripes on the forepart of the body, and tend toward brown instead of black.

Recent genetical research has showed, however, that the quagga wasn't a real species but instead a a sub-species of the normal zebra. After this discovery, a project has been started to recreate the quagga by selectively breeding zebras that look like quaggas.
