* A cold-blooded water-dwelling vertebrate? with gills, specifically "bony" fish of class Osteichthyes, "cartilaginous" fish of class Chondrichthyes, as well as various groups of "jawless" fish. May also be used in a broader sense to refer to other water-dwelling creatures such as jellyfish or cuttlefish, and even aquatic mammals that resemble piceans such as whales and dolphin?s (especially in English texts that predate modern biology).
