I changed the text from "byte is a basic unit of storage" because bit is a basic unit of storage, byte is derived. A few years ago I too thought byte meant 8 bits and my eyes were opend (by a lisp hacker as it happens). If you don't believe the claims about 7 bit byte and 9 bit byte and so on I suggest you look on the web. I hope this article is an improvement. --drj |
