Bash is a GNU Unix shell, made popular by distribution with Linux.
Bash is a GNU Unix shell, made popular by distribution with Linux. Like many GNU utilities the name is a pun; it stands for Bourne-Again Shell, [Steve Bourne]? being the author of the original shell, [Bourne shell]?.

Bash incorporates many features of later shells whilst still remaining largely compatible with the original Bourne shell. Of the new features most of them had their roots in the [Korn shell]?.
