The
USS Greeneville is a
submarine in the
navy of the
United States. On
February 9,
2001, the submarine struck and sank a
Japanese fishery
? training
ship, the
Ehime-Maru, near
Hawaii. Nine crew members of the
Ehime-Maru drowned, several of whom were high-school students from Uwajima
?, Japan. The ensuing investigation revealed that the tragedy occurred while the vessel was demonstrating rapid surfacing for a group of American civilians on board, causing controversy and public outcry. Cmdr. Scott Waddle, acting as skipper on the
Greeneville during the collision, retired from the Navy following the investigation.
