Durability of memory traces in the brain. The stronger the memory, the longer we can remember it.

We can roughly describe forgetting with R=e(-t/S) where R is [memory retention]?, S is relative strength of memory and t is time.

The best methods for increasing the strength of memory are:

  1. better memory representation (e.g. with mnemonic techniques)
  2. repetition based on active recall (esp. spaced repetition)
