General Description

TNG, through it's seeven years on the air, largely kept to the original series' episodic on-hour plot structures, all too often going something like this:

"The Enterprise is going along in space, minding it's own business, when suddenly they encounter something strange and bizarre that affects all crew members except for Data. After some hilarious hijinks that involved various cast members acting in bizarre ways, Data figures out what is going on and saves the day"

it's important to note that, while many episodes closely followed this formula (with mixed results), during the later years of the series quite a few recurring conflicts, story archs and larger political complexities were introduced that made the show on the whole generally more interesting to watch.

another recurring device used by SNG writers was to focus on the personal life of a given crew member and attempt to tie this internal plot line in with the more external plot line that is the main action of the episode. this is of course a pretty standard tv writing tool, and pretty much made or broke a given episode.

as a rule of thumb, any episode focusing on laforge or wesley crusher were generally bad, whereas anything with picard or worf as the focus was usually quite good. episodes featuring either troy, riker or data as the focus character were pretty mixed.

TNG was the first live-action continuation of Star Trek, a television series with a cult following. TNG also gained a considerable following.

It follows the journeys of the U.S.S. Enterprise-D, a ship of exploration and diplomacy.
