Changed: 1c1
As the railway developed and expanded one of the key issues was the guage of track to be used. This eventually resulted in a standard guage being adopted to allow inter-connectivity and inter-operability of the trains. In the UK this guage was at first 4 feet eight inches but later widened slightly to four feet eight and a half inches. This same guage was eventaully adopted in the United States. There is no good reason for this particular guage to have become the standard other than perhaps it was perhaps more widespread than any other. Its origins are believed to be from horse drawn mine workings in the North of England.
