In American football, the team which starts out in possession of the ball at the beginning of a football play, and the team which initiates play by a [football snap]? of the ball from the [football center]? to a [football back]?. The offensive team is eligible to legally excute certain maneuvers, including a punt, [place kick]?, or forward pass, which the defensive team (or [receiving team]? in the case of a [change of possession play]?) may not execute, even if they should come into possession of the ball during the course of the football play.
