Probably the most well-known prayer from the Christian religion. Excerpted from (Chapter 11???) of the Gospel of St. Luke in the New Testament, it was given by Jesus Christ in response to a request from the Apostles for guidance on how to pray.
Although numerous variations exist, this version, from the 1928 Book of Common Prayer, is a fairly well known example:
- Our Father, who art in Heaven,
- hallowed be Thy Name.
- Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done,
- on Earth, as it is in Heaven.
- Give us this day our daily bread,
- and forgive us our trespasses,
- as we forgive those who trespass against us.
- And lead us not into temptation,
- but deliver us from evil.
- For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
- for ever and ever.
- Amen.
