Intel's 80286 processor. It was a 16 bit processor that allowed extended memory to be used (up to 16 megs) and could run up to 12.5MHz. The 8086 by contrast was only able to address 1 meg of ram, and ran at up to 10MHz.
The Intel 80286 (officially called iAPX 286) is a 16-bit microprocessor that allows up to 16 megabytes of RAM. On DOS machines these can only be used via [extended memory]? emulation.
