Yep, pretty appalling. But what should it be? Why cut it entirely without replacing it with at least something just as brief? --LMS (who won't, contrary to appearances, be at work today...)

cut: The descendends of Ham, living in northern Africa, are called Hamites.
First, it's 'descendents' in English, but the sentence isn't worth revising.
Second, this sentence was believed in Europe before some date, I suppose, but it's being presented as a fact.
