Aquila is an equatorial constellation, known also as the "eagle". It is said to represent the eagle which, in classical mythology, was sent by the god Jupiter to carry Ganymede to Mount Olympus.

Aquila was one of the 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy. As one of the 88 modern constellations it is bordered by Sagitta, Hercules, Ophiuchus, Serpens Cauda, Scutum?, Sagittarius, Capricornus, Aquarius and Delphinus.

The bright star Altair lies in Aquila.
