On June 17, 1972 a group of five men were arrested whilst attempting to break into the headquarters of Democratic National Committee in the Watergate hotel, Washington, D.C.. The fact that one of the men, [J. W. McCord]?, was connected with the [Committee to Re-elect the President]? (C.R.E.E.P.), caused to some speculation linking the crime with White House, leading Nixon's press secretary [Ron Ziegler]? to dismiss it as a "third rate burglary".
The president, however, soon acted to slow the FBI's investigation of the crime, pressuring them by claiming that "National Security" would be put at risk. In fact, the crime, and numerous other "dirty tricks", had been planned in the [Oval Office]? with the President's full knowledge.
