A turboprop is a type of aircraft engine. It takes advantage of both propeller and jet engine technologies. Essentially it is a jet engine with a propellor connected to the shaft, usually via a reduction gear. Rather than being configured for maximum thrust (as in a normal jet-engine), it is configured for maximum revolutionary power. This drives the propellor, which creates the thrust.

As the engine is cheaper and simpler than larger jet engines, it is ideal for small to medium planes.

Not sure about this. Turboprops normally have more moving parts than turbojets, and i can't imagine them being cheaper to make, or maintain. I think the main advantages of a turboprop are better fuel efficiency, and more power at low air-speeds (which allows shorter take-off).
