A variation on the
long jump where instead of the distance for a single leap being recorded, competitors are allowed to step twice before their final leap. The board from where the jump is measured is moved back down the runway so as to allow competitors two steps to occur on it rather than in the sand.
The event is also informallly known as the "hop, step and jump".
The triple jump is held at all elite [track and field]? competitions, and the best competitors can leap over 18 metres.
