One of the first comic strips. It was drawn by artist Richard Felton Outcault. Debuted in 1895 in [Joseph Pulitzer]?'s New York World newspaper but moved to the Hearst? newspaper, Journal American in 1897 where it was part of the first Sunday comics section.

It figured in the public debate in the United States concerning the Spanish-American War when Hearst newspaper's warmongering was called yellow journalism after the strip.
