Sydney, capital city of the state of New South Wales in Australia, and Australia's largest and oldest city. It has a population of approximately 4 million, and was founded as a convict settlement in 1788. (See [First Fleet]?).

Sydney hosted the 2000 Summer Olympic Games.

The city's most famous landmarks are the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the Sydney Opera House.

Sydney has 6 universities: the University of Sydney, the [University of New South Wales]?, Macquarie University, the [University of Technology, Sydney]?, the [University of Western Sydney]?, and (one of the campuses of) the [Australian Catholic University]?.

Sydney also has an interesting subway system. (Melbourne is the only other city in Australia with one, but Sydney's is older and much more interesting.)

Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, is the home of the University College of Cape Breton (UCCB). With the disappearance of the steel industry and coal mining in Cape Breton, Sydney has been undergoing economic decline for several decades.
