A competitive sport involving using a trained dog to maneuver sheep into various required positions. It evolved from the workday activities of shepherds managing their flocks. They are most commonly practised in rural areas of the United Kingdom (especially Scotland and Wales, New Zealand, the United States, and Australia, mostly by actual sheep farmers who mainly develop their skills for utilarian purposes.

Sheepdog trials are commonly associated with [agricultural show]?s and as such events developed in the 1860's around Australia and New Zealand regular competitions began. To this day, they are mostly practised there, where they are popular attractions.

Various breeds of dog have been used in trials, including various types of collie?. The kelpie? is most common in Australia.
