1. Abbreviation for "Rapid Eye Movement". Part of the sleep during which people dream. Named after a characteristic of this part of sleep, which is much different from deep sleep. During a night of sleep, a person usually has about four or five periods of REM sleep, which are quite short at the beginning of the night, but long at the end. It is believed that REM sleep, and in particular dreaming, is necessary to process the experiences we have had during the day. REM sleep is so physiologically different from the other phases of sleep that they are collectively referred to as Non-REM sleep.
2. US rock band, formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980, and originally comprising Micheal Stipe (vocals), Bill Berry (drums), Peter Buck (guitar) and Mike Mills (bass). Throughout the 1980s, whilst with the independent label IRS, they achieved a growing cult status due mainly Stipe's elliptic (and sometimes inaudible and untelligible) lyrics and the bands sound, most noticeably influenced by [the Byrds]?. As their career progressed, however, the sound became more mainstream, which eventually led to their first hit single "The One I Love" (due mainly, however, to a misunderstanding of the song's lyric). At the same time, the lyrics were becoming more direct, with political themes appearing more explicitly, as on the LPs "Document" and "Green", the last for IRS and first for major label Warners, respectively.

Their next records "Out Of Time" and "Automatic For The People" were both critically acclaimed and massive international hits, spawning the hit singles "Losing My Religion", "Shiny Happy People", "Everybody Hurts" and "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite". The band's 1994 release, "Monster", proved to be a crossover hit and their best selling album to date. During the subsequent tour Berry suffered a brain haemorrhage on stage, which would eventually lead to his leaving the band. The band's newest album, "Reveal", is considered by many to be their most ambitious work, and is a lush contrast to the sparsely sounding "Up".
