Quinine is a natural
alkaloid having antipyretic, antimalarial and analgesic properties. It is especially used in the prevention of
malaria along with quinacrine

Peruvian tree. Quinine was isolated in
1820 and synthesis was achieved in
1944.
Excessive use of quinine may cause cinchonism? and even death.
It is the flavour component of [tonic water]?. The taste of the quinine lead British colonials to mix it with Gin thus leading to the popularity of the Gin & Tonic.
