Begun with Hero's Quest I (So you want to be a Hero?), this series by Corey and Lori Cole combined good humor, good puzzles and really bad puns with memorable characters to become one of the most enjoyable series in the Sierra stable. A copyright dispute over the name "Hero's Quest" turned the series title into "Quest for Glory", but the games themselves retained their high level of excellence all the way through QfG5?. Each game featured a different mythos (in order, Euro-Fairy tale; Arabian Nights; African legend; quasi-Transylvanian spooky story; and finally Greco-Mediterranean fantasy) with the hero facing increasingly powerful opponents with help from characters who become increasingly familiar from game to game. The enjoyment was enhanced by the player's ability to choose his character's career path from among the three traditional RPG backgrounds: fighter, spellcaster and thief. Further variation was added by the ability to add 'inappropriate' skills (eg make a fighter with magical ability or a spell-casting thief who can use a sword) and by the option in QfG2?&3 to turn your fighter into a Paladin. Each career path produced different game actions and puzzle results, which encouraged replay to see (for instance) what the inside of the Thieve's Guild looks like, or how to play Mages' Maze against Erasmus.
