The Ottawa Senators are a franchise of the National Hockey League based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The franchise was awarded December 6, 1990 and they began play in October 1992. The majority owner is Rod Bryden, the general manager is Marshall Johnston and the head coach is Jacques Martin.

The Senators suffered through several miserable seasons after they started play, but have consistently made the playoffs during Martin's tenure. Ottawa has not had much success in the playoffs, however, having won only one series in their 5 trips to the postseason.

Ottawa was locked in a contract dispute with [Alexei Yashin]? during the 1999-2000 season. Yashin held out for the entire season, but it was ruled that he still owed the Senators a year. He played during the 2000-2001 season, but was traded in summer 2001 to the New York Islanders? for Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckault and the Islanders' first round pick, which the Senators used to draft Jason Spezza.

The current star players on the Senators include forwards Daniel Alfredsson, Radek Bonk, Marian Hossa, Shawn McEachern? and Martin Havlat, defenceman Wade Redden and goaltender Patrick Lalime.
