[Home]Oliver Hazard Perry class frigate

HomePage | Recent Changes | Preferences

The frigates in service in the US Navy today all are of the Oliver Hazard Perry class, the lead ship of which (FFG-7) was launched in December 1977. The ships of the class sometimes have little in common with each other, as they have been integrated from point defense into the more modern defensive modes and had new technology sensors and weapons fitted. Oliver Hazard Perry frigates have withstood striking a mine ([USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58)]?) and being struck by two [Harpoon anti-ship missiles]? ([USS Stark (FFG-31)]?). Both ships were repaired and remain in service.

Armed with both missiles and underwater detection gear, the OHP-class frigates are tasked with detection of all types of threats and with prosecuting an attack either autonomously or in concert with a task force. If an Aegis system is in use, they are key launch platforms for defense against and attack of incoming airborne targets.
