Monterrey

Capital of the state of Nuevo León, in Mexico. It is currently the second most important city in Mexico, and it has always been known for its industry, particularly beer, glass, and steel. Carta Blanca, Bohemia, Casta, Indio, Chipinque, and NocheBuena are examples of the beers produced there. Vitro figures as one of the most important glass factories. The Steel industry used to be led by the "Compañía Fundidora de Fierro y Acero de Monterrey", popularly known as Fundidora.

Monterrey is located in northeastern Mexico, and has about 4.5 million inhabitants. It is surrounded by other towns, which together form the metro area. These towns are San Pedro Garza Garcia, San Nicolas de los Garza, Apodaca, Guadalupe, Escobedo, and Santa Catarina.

Brief History

In the mid 1500s, the area where Monterrey is located was part of the Valle de Extremadura. Several expeditions by Alberto del Canto that tried to colonize the desert area had been unfruitful. An expedition by Luis Carvajal y de la Cueva tried to establish something in the area, but it was unfruitful as well. A third expedition, by Diego de Montemayor, along with 12 other families, was the expedition to found it. Monterrey was founded on September 20, 1596, by Don Diego de Montemayor, next to a water spring called "Ojos de Agua de Santa Lucia". On the site where these springs are, the Museo Nacional de Historia Mexicana is now.

Monterrey is typitcally known for its hardworking people of great sincerity.

Monterrey is "commercially" known as "La Ciudad de las Montañas" or City of Mountains. Legendarily, it is known as "Sultana del Norte" (Northern Sultana).

Food

Typical food from Monterrey includes "machacado con huevo", a dish prepared with dry beef, eggs, and salsa; but perhaps the most traditional dish from Monterrey is the Cabrito al Pastor. Cabrito al Pastor is "baby goat", cooked in the heat of embers. It resembles a Jewish form of preparing goat to eat.

Sports

It has two soccer teams, one called "Tigres" (home stadium is the stadium of the Universdad Autónoma de Nuevo León), and the other one is "Rayados" (home stadium is the stadium of the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey).

There is a third soccer team, indoor soccer, called "La Raza".

It has one baseball team, called "Los Sultanes de Monterrey". Their field boasts as the biggest baseball stadium in Latin America.
