MONETA NOVA or New Money was the name for the coins of the
Holy Roman Empire. The silver coins were called Moneta Nova Argenteus. A coin stated further what city or CIVITATIS it was stamped in.
The city of Dortmund for example had coins stating as follows :
MONETA NOVA CIVITATIS IMPER. TREMONIENSIS.
It also stated the ruler at that time. Often abbreviations were used, because there was not enough room for full descriptions on a coin.
Some coins were as follows :
- :Taler ,Thaler Dollar
- :Ducat, Dukat
- :Schilling
- :Ferding
- :Florin
- :Artig
- :Dreipolcher
- :d'or
- :Gulden
- :Batzen
- :Groschen (Grossi, Groescher)
- :Pfennig Pennies?
Earlier Holy Roman Empire coins were called Denars and Brakteats.
