Lake Eyre is, on the rare occasions that it fills the largest lake in Australia and is the lowest point in Australia at approximately 15 m below sea level (check this number). Lake Eyre is located in the deserts of central Australian, in northern South Australia. Lake Eyre spends most of the time as a dry salt pan. It is only during the rainy season when the rivers from the northeast (around Birdsville) fill up and fill the lake with enormous quantities of water. But having no outlet, the water in the lake soon evaporates.

It goes dry for *years* at a time, doesn't it? Fillings only occur quite rarely, IIRC --Robert Merkel
