Konrad von Gesner (March 26 1516? - December 13 1565)

Swiss naturalist. Born in Zurich. His three-volume Historia Animalium (1555-1558) is considered the beginning of modern zoology. He also wrote Bibliotheca Universalis (1545), which purported to contain summaries of all the known books in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew.

The tropical herb and shrub family Gesneriaceae is named after him.
