Colourless, thin liquid. A hydrocarbon mix, it is obtained in the fractional distillation of oil at 150°C and 275°C (the C
12 to C
15 range). At one time very widely used in lamps but now mainly as a fuel in jet engines.
Abraham Gesner named it in 1854 from the Greek word keros (wax).
Also called kerosine and coal oil..
