German organic chemist. Born in Darmstadt?. He was professor at Ghent (1858-65) and at Bonn. He made studies of various carbon compounds, especially benzene, for the structure of which he developed the ring theory and valence?s, in 1857 Kekule proposed that carbon was tetravalent.
