Abbreviation to include all pre-university education in the American education system. K-12 stands for Kindergarten to grade twelve. Grade twelve is the last grade of High school in the US.

Daycare, Pre-school and Kindergarten are typically attended by children ages 3-6. Primary or Elementary school is first through sixth grades, although in some places this is second through fifth. Middle School is sixth grade through seventh grade or eighth grade. Junior High school is seventh through ninth. Secondary or High School is seventh or ninth through twelfth.

Twefth grade is usually attended by students ages 17 to 19, depending upon when they started school.

Any particular town may have some combination of these grades.

eg: Kindergarten, Elementary School (through fifth), Middle School (through Eighth) and High School (through Twelfth)

or: Kindergarten, Primary School (through sixth), Secondary School (through Twefth)

or: Elemetary School (including Kindergarten to fifth) Middle School (6), Junior High (7-9), High (10-12)

The choice of which exists is dependent upon the resources and temperament of the School Board.
