Awarded annually since 1954 to the NHL defense player who demonstrates the greatest all-round ability in that position, in the opinion of a poll of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association. The winner receives $10,000 and the trophy, the first two runners-up $6,000 and $4,000.
Named after a former owner of the Detroit Red Wings team. the first winner was Red Kelly of the Detroit Red Wings.
